Who's new
Chaney's 33 points too much for Wyandotte

Sumner Academy senior Davonte Chaney (pictured above) said he worked all summer on his shot.
Tonight against the Wyandotte Bulldogs, that work helped him lead his Sumner Academy Sabres to a 90-71 victory against Wyandotte.
Chaney scored 33 points, a game-high, in a game that featured the two best big men in Wyandotte County – Wyandotte's Trinity Hall (pictured right) and Sumner's Reese Holliday (pictured left).
The Sabres, now 5-0 on the season, never trailed in the game, jumping out to a 9-0 lead behind five points from Holliday. After Wyandotte narrowed the lead to 15-8, five straight points from Chaney pushed the lead to 12 points.
Chaney, known for his great ability on the defensive side, said his play there led to his success.
"I wasn't too focused offensively," he said. "My goal was to play good defense and turn good defense into points. Defense leads to offense."
While it was defense that Chaney focused on, for fans of offense, there wasn't too much to complain about. Seven players scored in double figures; three scored above 20 points.
Wyandotte was led by Terry Moore's 21 points.
After Sumner built a 42-28 halftime lead, Moore scored Wyandotte's first six points of the second half, narrowing Sumner's lead to 10.
But as soon as Wyandotte crept back into the game, Chaney, Holliday (23 points) and Benny Parker (17 points) did just enough each instance to keep Wyandotte from inching closer.
"On the road you are already down 10 points," said Wyandotte head coach Tracy Dyer. "We tried to adjust but we'll get a whole lot better later this year. I thought we came out a little flat and we didn't have the energy required to beat Sumner."
Wyandotte's challenge got a lot steeper when Hall, who ended up with 19 points, fouled out early in the fourth quarter. However, the Bulldogs bit back and brought the game to within eight points.
A Montell Anderson (11 points) put back brought Wyandotte to within nine points. After Chaney responded to make the score 74-63, a Moore three-point shot brought Wyandotte to within eight points, the closest they would get to the lead.
Chaney scored five straight points to extend Sumner's lead back to 13 points.
Holliday and Chaney, the two leading seniors for the Sabres, scored the game's final eight points after Wyandotte narrowed the lead to 10.
Sumner starts off league play 1-0.
"We just have to keep it going," Chaney said. "Last year we started off undefeated by lost in the Hy-Vee Shootout. We'll need to play in control to do well."
Between the teams, 16 three-point shots were made. Adrian Goodlow, 13 points, connected on four long-range shots for the Bulldogs. Hall hit three, while Chaney hit three for the Sabres.
