POLICE BEAT: Reader says crime around Piper increasing

I received the following email from a reader in Piper this morning concerning an uptick in crime.

One of the downsides of a Legends, large shopping centers and a new Wal-Mart is the increased possibility of crime. This situation appears to be an effect of that theory:

My mothers car was broken into on Sunday night, the neighbor two
houses away on Sat night, and the neighbor two house from that on Friday night.

A vehicle was stolen from Danny's last week also. This seems to be hush hush and needs to be addressed.

When I called the police station last night after finding out about all of the others I was informed extra patrol could be added.

A person might be surprised to find out the true number of police reported thefts, burglaries and other felonies which occur in the Piper area. The UG does NOT want those incidents to be front page news, so they are often under-reported & / or hushed.

I know two people who had their cars broken into at the Legends. They both had their passenger side windows broken and stero stolen. It happened around 4pm.

I understand with the increased number of businesses out in the Piper area there would be an encreased amount of crime, however, there has been crime in Piper for years. Johnson County was never in the news years ago, and then when it was reported they always made a point of stressing when the criminals were from Wyandotte County. I sure hope the people in Piper won't start saying the criminals are from the inner city. I have overheard that in a couple stores already while waiting in line. Criminals come from everywhere and are made up off all kinds of people. One thing we all need to do is make sure we stand together and do what it takes to keep police on the force and if they want to raise taxes to add more police vote for it. There are not that many police watching out for us as you think. Ask the police cheif what the patrol hours are, how many are on each patrol and how many in each disttict. It will shock you. I know several policemen and it shocked me when I asked about our neighborhood. Let's all be grateful for the policemen that voted for the wage freeze. My heart goes out to them, but they did a great thing by keeping the 16 on the job. Big kudo's for them.
