Turner survives upset bid from Harmon
On paper, the Turner-Harmon game appeared to be the biggest mismatch of the week. Entering the game at 7-1, Turner escaped J.C. Harmon High School with a 28-14 victory.
The Hawks, who entered 2-6 on the season, punched Turner early on.
After Golden Bears quarterback Nick Bloomer gave Turner a 7-0 lead with a four-yard touchdown, Harmon's leader stepped up.
John Zeno returned a punt from 60 yards out for a touchdown. A two-point conversion by Okeye Nyondweh gave Harmon an 8-7 lead.
Zeno struck again from 60 yards out in the second quarter, scoring on a run and giving Harmon a 14-7 lead after a missed two-point conversion.
As Zeno stepped up for Harmon, Turner's leader stepped up beginning in the second quarter.
Rashon Thames scored his first of two touchdowns from 38 yards out, tying the game at 14. Bloomer scored another touchdown on the ground, this time from 17 yards, regaining the lead for Turner.
The score would remain 21-14 until Thames scored early in the fourth quarter from the 20-yard-line.
Overall, Thames rushed for 168 yards on 25 carries. Zeno ran for 123 yards on 31 carries.
The Golden Bears end the regular season at 8-1 and with the best record of any Wyandotte County team. Harmon closes 2-7.

Sumner Academy makes Harmon pay for mistakes, wins KCK League (UPDATE: Video added)

Sumner Academy's offense capitalized off of three forced turnovers deep in Harmon territory to give the Sabres their second consecutive league title.
Sumner defeated Harmon 30-14 to improve to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the Knasas City, Kan., League.
After a shaky start on offense, the Sabres defense picked it up early in the first quarter. Harmon quarterback John Zeno (pictured right) was stripped of the ball by a maul of Sumner defenders. Many on the Hawks' sideline felt Zeno had established forward progress before the ball was ruled a fumble.
From there, Sabres quarterback Armand Brisbane converted a touchdown after a designed run play allowed him to cross the end zone from 11 yards out.
Both defenses played well on a cold night, holding each offense off the scoreboard during most of the second quarter. Each defense held the other's offense on fourth and short.
It was Zeno's second turnover inside his own 25 that gave Sumner its second golden opportunity to score. Zeno was picked off around his own 15-yard-line.
After penalties sent the Sabres offense back to Harmon's 22-yard-line, Brisbane connected with Marcus Allen on a 22-yard touchdown pass, providing the Sabres a 14-0 lead.
But Harmon struck back through its special teams early in the second half.
Zeno returned a punt 55 yards for a score, picking up the ball and alluding multipe Sabres defenders. A failed conversion left the score 14-6.
It appeared the Hawks would have a great opportunity to tie the game. Harmon defenders charged in and blocked a punt. But the officials again provided bad news for the Hawks, calling the punt block back after a chop-block was called.
Without the penalty, the Hawks would have taken over on Sumner's 22-yard-line.
With the Sabres driving, Jervon Hooks picked off his first of two Brisbane passes in the game. However, three plays later, Zeno caughed up the ball and Brisbane would make the Hawks pay on an ensuing drive to give Sumner a 22-6 lead.
Sumner's running game helped put the game away. Torrel Saffold (pictured top) rushed for 177 yards on just 23 carries, with many of the yards coming late in the game to help grind the clock out.
Sophomore Benny Parker put the dagger in the heart with a 57-yard touchdown run. Shaquille Simmons would score a late touchdown for Harmon.

Zeno, Hawks knockout Bulldogs with late comeback
After years of struggling on the football field, the Harmon Hawks will have an opportunity to claim a share of the Kansas City, Kan., League title.
The Hawks defeated the Wyandotte Bulldogs 16-8 at Harmon High School Friday night. The Hawks improve to 2-5 on the season, with a 2-1 KCK League record.
"It was a big win for us," said Calvin Davenport, head coach of the Hawks.
After falling behind 8-0, the Hawks responded in the second quarter behind a two-yard touchdown run by John Zeno. After both offenses failed to score during most of the second half, the Hawks came back late for the victory.
"We remained patient on offense," Davenport said. "The defense stepped up and created a late turnover."
The late turnover came after the Bulldogs, for some reason, calling a flea flicker late in the game when it appeared they could run the ball out. The flea flicker was fumbled between the running back and quarterback.
From there, the Hawks offense took advantage, as Zeno connected with Jervon Hooks from 15 yards out with under a minute left to win the game. The Hawks added the two-point conversion and would add two more points on the ensuing kickoff, as they gained a safety.
Now 2-1 in league play, the Hawks have an opportunity to claim a portion of the KCK League title, as they take on Sumner Academy next week.
"We're not going to do anything different at all this week," Davenport said.
Wyandotte falls to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in KCK League play.

But St. James' Avrill Morrisette scored three times for St. James, as they scored 26 unanswered points. Overall, he had just eight carries for 121 yards and three touchdowns.
He scored from 17 yards, four yards and 29 yards out in the victory. Harmon's Jervon Hooks scored from one yard out late in the game to bring Harmon within 34-12.
