UPDATE: Eight-year-old dies from earlier car accident
Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department officials released more information about today's accident on I-70 East at I-635.
Among the worst news – an eight-year-old has died as a result of injuries.
Three children were ejected from a car, according to witnesses on the scene. An eight-year-old girl, 10-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl were transported to the emergency room of Children's Mercy Hospital.
Meanwhile, a two-year-old was also transported to Children's Mercy Hospital, along with an adult, who is listed as the mother of the two-year-old.
At the hospital, the eight-year-old girl died from injuries.
According to Craig Duke, battalion chief and spokesperson for the KCKFD, four children were in the vehicle, along with two adults.
Here's his statement (via email) on the accident:
Fire crews on scene within five minutes reported one vehicle accident with two adult occupants and four children occupants between the ages of two and 12 years of age.
Information received from witnesses indicated that three of the children had been ejected from the vehicle during the accident. Off-duty JOCO Sheriff Officer and KU Medical Center Nurse on scene administering CPR to one of the victims. Crews on scene reported 3 victims unconscious upon their arrival.
One EMS unit transported 1 female (8 yrs old) emergency to Children’s; one EMS unit transported 1 male (10 yrs old) and 1 female (12 yrs old) emergency to Children’s Mercy. One EMS units transported 1 male (2 yrs old) and mother of 2 year old to Children’s Mercy.
Eight year old female transported emergency later succumbed to her injuries.
No update on status of other patients.

Still no official crash report for I-70 pileup
Here's another sign that Sunday's vehicle pileup on Interstate 70 near Bonner Springs was beyond normal.
The Kansas Highway Patrol hasn't placed the report on its crash log Web site yet.
Earlier this week, the crash that involved 38 cars on Northbound Interstate 435 was placed online.
No official statistics in terms of how many cars were involved and how many injuries were reported have been released yet.

I-70 reopened
Both Eastbound and Westbound Interstate 70 have been reopened near the Kansas Highway 7 interchange.
It was closed for a number of hours today after a large pile-up.

Westbound I-70 closed near K-7
A multiple car accident has closed down Westbound Interstate 70 at the Kansas Highway 7 interchange.
Traffic is currently backed up to Interstate 435.
Drivers are encouraged to find and use alternate routes, as the area will be closed down for "several hours," according to a press release from the Kansas Department of Transportation.
(UPDATE 3:05): The incident is being described as a 60-70 car pileup. No word on the specific amount of injuries, but multiple EMS units have been dispatched.
(UPDATE 3:32): Rather than 60 cars, it's being described by witnesses as one with 30 to 40 vehicles. No injury numbers yet.
(UPDATE 3:40): KMBC Channel 9 news has an unreal photo gallery from the scene.
(UPDATE 3:51): As imagined, there are multiple confirmed injuries and drivers and passengers are being transported to local hospitals. Witnesses and responders for the Kansas Highway Patrol and emergency service units are still extracting people from vehicles at the scene.
(UPDATE 5:15): I-70 Westbound at the K-7 interchange remains closed. It will not be opened for a number of hours, and officials recommend drivers to avoid the area.

Two separate accidents around Interstate 70
While the snow isn't coming down too hard, there are some accidents around Interstate 70.
Two non-injury accidents have been reported to EMS units in Kansas City, Kan., today.
- One accident involves a red Blazer and a brown Mercedes. The accident sounds like a hit and run incident, as the red Blazer left the scene quickly. The Blazer's bumper is hanging off the vehicle.
- A second accident happened on the Westbound I-70 ramp from 7th Street. One car slid off the road. A few minutes later, a second car slid off in the same area. It's unknown if the second car became in contact with the first vehicle. No injuries have been reported and no heavy rescue units have been called to the location.

Accident on I-70
A car accident has been reported to EMS units on Eastbound Interstate 70 near N. 57th Street.
A Maroon Mazda was involved in the crash. The driver appears not to have been injured.

Two car accident on I-70 and K-7
A two-car accident on Interstate 70 and Kansas Highway 7 has temporarily closed down a lane.
The accident occurred on the ramp going northbound on K-7. A Honda and a yellow pickup truck were the cars involved.
No word yet on exact injuries, but the situation hasn't been classified as an emergency, which generally means injuries are relatively minor.

KCKFD responds to vehicle fire
A vehicle fire on Interstate 70 has been reported.
The vehicle fire is located just west of the 57th Street exit. There were no injuries to the fire, which happened just before 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.

Cincinnati resident injured in Wyandotte County accident
A Cincinnati, Ohio man was injured after a vehicle accident yesterday on Interstate 70.
George Bolton lost control of his vehicle while traveling westbound on I-70's center lane. After losing control of his vehicle, he struck a median barrier wall.
The accident occurred at the 411.6 mile-marker in Kansas City, Kan. The man was wearing his seatbelt and was transported to Providence Hospital.
Bolton's car was the only one involved.

Interstate 70 ramps in Wyandotte County closed because of gas leak
The gas leak in the West Bottoms, reported throughout the Kansas City media in Missouri, has closed down traffic ramps in Wyandotte County.
Eastbound Interstate 70 at Interstate 670 and ramps at Washington, Minnesota and Fairfax have all been closed until further notice due to the gas leak in the area.
Traffic is being detoured to James Street.
UPDATE (4 p.m.): RAMPS are now re-opened.

TRAFFIC BEAT: Three weekend accidents on KCK highways
There were three reported vehicle accidents on highways within Kansas City, Kan., or Wyandotte County boundaries this past weekend.
1.) On Nov. 14, two vehicles were involved in an accident just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday evening. The first vehicle, a 2003 Toyota 4 Runner driven by Shawnee, Kan., resident Graham Noble, was traveling southbound in the northbound lane of Kansas 7 when a second vehicle hit it while traveling the correct direction.
The second vehicle, a 2008 Ford, was driven by Robyn Marshall of Leavenworth, Kan. Both were taken to area hospitals with possible injuries.
2.) Two cars were involved in an incident on I-70 just before 3 p.m. on Sunday. The exact location of the accident was I-70 westbound at the 416.7 mile marker.
Vehicle two was stopped in traffic due to a previous vehicle incident. It was stuck by Vehicle one after it failed to stop. There were two occupants in each car, with one from each being injured.
Julie Chang of KCK was the driver of car one, while Charles Jordan of Kansas City, Mo., drove vehicle two. Jordan was taken to an area hospital.
•3.) At 4 p.m. Sunday, Jose Toraya of KCK lost control of his 1996 Isuzu SUV in a single vehicle accident.
Wet roads are blamed.
Toraya and KCK resident Fatima Sibil were both taken to area hospitals for possible injuries.
The accident occurred on the 421.6 milemarker on I-70 westbound. The car lost control and struck the median barrier wall.

The accident occurred around lunch time. No status on the driver's condition.

Truck jackknifes on Interstate 435 near Interstate 70
A large truck has jackknifed on Interstate 435 near Interstate 70.
Emergency crews and the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department have responded to the scene. The accident occurred near the ramp leading onto Eastbound I-70.
Luckily, there are no injuries on the scene.
Traffic is being diverted around the scene by police officers on scene.
Nails on Interstate 70 creating traffic headaches
For those traveling on Interstate 70 soon, there may be a traffic hazard to deal with.
A large bucket of nails was spilled on I-70 Eastbound near the Interstate 635 entry/exit ramp.
Most of the nails are in the middle lane. About five minutes ago, there were some cars backed up.
UPDATE (3:15): If possible, it's probably best to avoid I-70 East for now.
Multiple flat tires are being addressed, according to multiple police/EMS respondents at the scene. The quantity of nails described is "large."
A "traffic hazard" has been declared.
UPDATE (3:18) : The scene has now been broadoned from 62nd Street to the ramps near I-635. It's being recommended by officials on the scene not to travel on this passage of the highway.
UPDATE (3:25): A few updates –
• At least one driver had multiple flat tires due to the nails.
• The incident is now being described as an accident. The bucket apparently fell from a truck.
• The driver of the vehicle that last the nails has reported back on the scene and said the business will "take responsibility" for the flat tires and accident.
UPDATE (3:52): No major updates in past half hour or so. The Kansas Department of Transportation arrived at the scene earlier in the hour to clear the nails. At least seven cars were lined up along I-70 in need of assistance.

Accident causing problems on I-70, 110th Street
A vehicle accident near 110th Street and Interstate 70 has closed a ramp from 110th Street to Interstate 70.
The ramp has been closed, as some traffic have used it and ended up going the wrong way. Cars are being diverted to State Avenue.
EMS units have responded to the accident, as one person in the vehicle may have suffered cardiac arrest.
