Abilene man charged for bank robbery

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – An Abilene man was charged today for his involvement in a Johnson County robbery.

Sixty-year-old Larry Rice allegedly robbed a bank located within a Hy-Vee Grocery Store in Overland Park, Kan.

Rice, who turned himself into the Johnson County Sheriff's Department, faces 20 years in prison and a fine up to $250,000.

Per the complaint filed today in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan., Rice told the teller:

“This is how it is going to go,” and lifted up his shirt and showed the teller what appeared to be the butt of a gun in his waistband. Then he said, “I want all the money. No dye packs.” He repeated the phrase, “Get me the money, get me the money.” Then he left the bank with the money.

Over $2,000 from area Pizza Hut stolen

The Pizza Hut at 4825 State Avenue was robbed on Saturday morning.

According to a Kansas City, Kan., police report, the robbery happened at gunpoint at around 10 a.m. last Saturday. The theft also did not happen at the store, per the police report.

Instead, it happened at 5130 Muncie Drive. The State Avenue Pizza Hut was listed as a "victim" in the report.

One suspect involved left the area with $2,196.37 in cash.

Just one employee was listed in the report. The employee was listed as a victim of battery and aggravated assault.

POLICE BEAT: Woman robbed of $150

A woman was robbed at gun-point last night on the 1300 Block of Central Avenue.

A thief used a handgun to rob the woman at around 7:30 p.m. last night. No one was seriously injured in the case. A witness was on the scene as well.

A case of aggravated assault and aggravated robbery were reported.

POLICE BEAT: Cash, shotgun stolen from home

A home was burglarized on the 3000 Block of S 39th Street.

Two people entered the home in the early morning hours of Feb. 22. and took about $2,500 in money. They also stole a shotgun from the residence.

The crooks entered by force at approximately 1:30 a.m. No one was harmed in the burglary, which was classified as aggravated by members of the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department.

A case of criminal damage was also filed.

POLICE BEAT: Church's Chicken on Central Avenue robbed

An armed person robbed the Church's Chicken at 12th and Central Avenue Sunday.

The robber, who used a handgun, assaulted two employees inside the business and took $600 of cash.

The robbery happened just after midnight on Sunday morning. It was reported to Kansas City, Kan., police minutes after the robbery concluded.

The two assaulted male employees are 26 years old and 20 years old. No one was injured in the robbery.

State Avenue store robbed at gunpoint

A store on 36th and State Avenue was robbed this afternoon.

The Adarrotes Delicias was robbed this afternoon by a man described as having a gray hooded sweatshirt with a ski mask over his face.

The thief pulled a handgun, took the store's money and fled the scene. No shots were fired and no one at the scene was injured.

POLICE BEAT: $750 in hand tools stolen from Time Warner vehicle

A vehicle was robbed of $750 of tools on the 1500 Block of N. 64th Street earlier this week.

The theft was reported to police on Monday. The crime likely occurred from 10 p.m. Sunday to 7:30 a.m. on Monday.

The vehicle is owned by Time Warner Cable. The vehicle's rear window was shattered, a $500 loss in terms of damage.

A police report for both burglary and criminal damage were filed.

POLICE BEAT: Burger King on Rainbow Boulevard robbed

The Burger King at 4004 Rainbow Boulevard was robbed Saturday night of $600.

One person entered the fast food joint with a handgun and proceeded to rob the store of $600. The robbery happened Saturday night at around 8 p.m.

A Kansas City, Kan., Police Department report shows that four employees were working the shift at the time.

All four of them were listed as victims of assault. Among the employees were two 18 year olds.

Police arrived a few minutes after it was reported. The scene was cleared just after 10 p.m.

POLICE BEAT: Multiple copper thefts reported

Surprise – a handful of copper thefts were reported to Kansas City, Kan., Police recently.

• About $2,000 wort of copper piping was stolen from a building on the 2300 Block of N. 68th Street. The copper was stolen on Jan. 30 and the incident was reported to police on Jan. 31. A door was damaged, which required police to file an accompanying criminal damage report.

• $600 in air conditioning coil, along with 100 ft. of copper tubing valued at $300, were stolen from the 8200 Block of Orient. The crime happened on Jan. 27, but wasn't reported to KCK police until Feb. 4. Four window panels were damaged at the scene.

• About $500 in copper piping was stolen from the 900 Block of N. 84th Drive. The crime happened between Feb. 2 and Feb. 4. It was reported to KCK police on Feb. 4. A criminal damage report was filed.

• $600 worth of air conditioner copper coil and 40 feet of copper tubing valued at $100 were stolen from the 500 Block of N. 83rd Street. The theft happened sometime between Jan. 30 and Feb. 3. A criminal damage report was filed.

• $1,000 in copper pipe was stolen from the 7000 Block of Edith between 7 a.m. on Feb. 3 to 11:30 on Feb. 4. A criminal damage report was filed.

POLICE BEAT: Three water pumps stolen on Leavenworth Road

Three water pumps valued at $600 were stolen from the 5700 Block of Leavenworth Road on Feb. 3.

The theft was made during the time periods of 5-9 p.m. on Feb. 3. The crime was reported to Kansas City, Kan., Police on Feb. 4. Police reported to the scene after 4 p.m. that day.

Along with the stolen pumps, a car's tire was damaged to the value of $175.

POLICE BEAT: 115 batteries stolen

Budget Battery, located on the 2400 Block of S. 51st Street, was robbed of 115 batteries earlier this week.

The crime happened in the overnight hours of Feb. 3. The timeline of when the crime happened is listed at just after 3 a.m. on a Kansas City, Kan., Police Department report.

The batteries are valued at $1,500.

A report of criminal damage was also written up by reporting police.

POLICE BEAT: $8,000 in jewelry stolen from home

A burglar stole approximately $8,000 in jewelry last week from a home in Kansas City, Kan.

The incident occurred in the late morning hours of Jan. 24 on the 1700 Block of Ruby Avenue.

Once inside the home after shattering a window, the thief made off with the jewelry. The damage estimated to the window was just $30.

Kansas City, Kan., police filed both a report of burglary and criminal damage.

POLICE BEAT: $5K in wires stolen, $2K in pipes

A home on Leavenworth Road was robbed of $5,000 in electrical wiring and $2,000 in pipes.

The robbery occurred between Jan. 20-23 on the 5300 Block of Leavenworth Road. A police report was written for both burglary and criminal damage, as multiple robbers vandalized the home's interior to the price tag of $10,000.

The incident was reported to the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department just after 2 p.m. on Jan. 23.

UPDATE: Forgot to put this in the original post, but the police report indicates that five people broke into the home.

POLICE BEAT: $1,500 in copper piping stolen

Copper apparently remains a hot commodity as the calendar has been turned.

About $1,500 in copper piping was stolen from American General on the 2200 Block of N. 57th Terrace.

The piping was stolen during the overnight hours of Jan. 25. It was reported to police on Jan. 26.

In the police report, the thief damaged the front door frame to enter the building with a personal weapon. Damage to the front door was estimated at $300.

POLICE BEAT: Four furnaces stolen

A facility on the 400 Block of N. 18th Street was robbed of four furnaces valued at over $6,000.

The crime happened anywhere between Jan. 18 and Jan. 21, per a police report from the Kansas City, Kan., Police Department. The victim of the robbery is listed as Donnelly Housing of Parkville, Mo.

Along with the furnaces, about $1,000 in damage was done to doors, as force was used to break into the building.

A criminal damage report was filed, along with the burglary report.

It was reported to police Jan. 21.
